Florence Mary Thomas Floyd, 93, Phoenixville Florence Mary Floyd went home to her eternal home with God on November 30, 2014, at the age of 93. She had been living at Frederick Living in Frederick, PA since 2001. Born on January 25, 1921, in Reading, Pennsylvania to Newell and Hazel Thomas, who both died when Florence was young. She is preceded in death by brothers, Buddy and Robert. She was married to Rev. Donald Thomas Floyd (died 1/8/2008) on September 12, 1942. A graduate of Reading High School, Florence was a bookkeeper at The Full Fashioned Hosiery Company Knolte and Hurst. Later she worked at Merck Sharpe and Dohme and oversaw the development of the Merck Manual. Throughout her life she was a talented artist, singer and community activist. Devoted to serving God and people, she led a wide range of community, state and national efforts from Garden Clubs, to the Gray Lady Red Cross Affiliate to the Chair of the National Day of Prayer. Serving as a pastoral partner with her husband, Don, they served parishes in the Evangelical Congregational, Evangelical Reformed and the United Church of Christ. Pastorates in Harrisburg, Pottstown, Glenside, Pleasantville, Valley Forge, Auburn, Leesport, Trappe and Lionville, allowed Florence to serve in dozens of organizations and become a trusted adviser and friend to thousands of parishioners. On the day of Martin Luther King's March on Washington, she organized her family to sail to Ghana West Africa as she and her husband would lead the United Church of Christ's Mission in Ghana. The Mission served schools, hospital, agricultural efforts and a seminary. It was the model of the emerging mission field work. In her later life she devoted her time to helping care for her children and grandchildren. As Alzheimer's took over her life, she was widely known for her smile, caring heart and singing "Jesus Loves Me". She is survived by her son, Donald and wife Carolyn of Clarksville, MD, daughter Janet Schaefer and husband Ken of Phoenixville, PA and son Tom and wife Marie of Roebling, NJ. Grandchildren: Jacob Floyd, Jordan Floyd Soheilian, Matthew Floyd, Patrick and Bryan Orwig, Andrew and Karen Schaefer, Thomas Floyd, Jenna Floyd Schuster, Julie and Emily Floyd. She has seven great grandchildren: Evie Soheilian, Gianna, Adelina and Veronica Floyd, Jude, John, Stella and Paul Schuster. Services are will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Frederick Living, P.O. Box 498, Frederick, PA 19435-0498. Arrangements are being made by Shalkop, Grace & Strunk Funeral Home, Spring City.
