Young Soo was born on August 3, 1946, in northern Korea. When the Korean War broke out in 1950, he and his family fled south in search of safety. The war brought hardship and upheaval to his early life, but Young Soo’s perseverance and determination carried him through. He became a dedicated student, graduating at the top of his high school class before beginning his career at Samick Musical Instruments Company in their import/export department. It was there that he met Hae Wook Byun, a coworker whose beauty, intelligence, and charm won his heart. They married in 1974.

In 1977, Young Soo was asked to open a Samick office in the United States. He and Hae Wook immigrated to Glendale, California, with their young son, Yoon Il (now David). Their daughter, Janet, was born in 1980. Shortly thereafter, Young Soo decided to pursue his longtime dream of owning a business. He loaded his family into a red station wagon and drove across the country to New York. Six-month-old Janet took the ride in a laundry tub in the back seat.

The family settled into a one-bedroom apartment in Flushing, Queens, and Young Soo opened a men’s clothing store in Jersey City, New Jersey. Through endless hard work and an entrepreneurial spirit, he grew the store into a successful wholesale business, Supreme Casualwear Inc., which he owned and operated for more than 20 years. He designed dress shirts, suits, and leisurewear that were, at one point, sold in over 100 stores nationwide. His work took him around the world, collaborating with factories in Korea, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. In 1987, his success enabled him to move his family to Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, where his children grew up. Although he never had the chance to attend college himself, he proudly put both of his children through college.

Young Soo retired in 2006, and he and Hae Wook moved to Hope Mills, North Carolina, near Fort Bragg. (They chose North Carolina at Janet’s suggestion, as she planned to move to Raleigh or Chapel Hill after law school. She never did—proof, perhaps, that one should be cautious when taking major life advice from a 26-year-old.) Young Soo embraced his new community and formed a close bond with a group of U.S. military veterans who had served in the Korean War. He also loved going to the North Carolina shore to boat and fish. 

In 2022, Young Soo and Hae Wook moved to Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, to be closer to Janet and her family.

Young Soo enjoyed fishing, boating, and keeping up with political affairs in Korea. He loved good food and good drinks—especially Scotch whisky and vodka martinis—and had a deep appreciation for sushi. His greatest joy came from sharing meals and moments with his family.

Young Soo is survived by his beloved wife, Hae Wook Lee; his children, David Lee (husband of Julie) and Janet Lee (wife of Andrew); his cherished grandchildren, Robin and Zoe; and his siblings, Gil Soo Lee, Geum Sook Lee, and Jin Soo Lee.

A Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 PM (Noon) on Friday, November 21, at R. Strunk Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Phoenixville. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the funeral home.

영수 님은 1946년 8월 3일 북한 지역에서 태어나셨습니다. 1950년 한국전쟁 발발 후, 가족과 함께 안전을 찾아 남쪽으로 피난하셨습니다. 전쟁으로 인한 어려움과 혼란 속에서도 그는 굳은 의지로 학업에 매진하여 고등학교를 수석으로 졸업했고, 이후 삼익악기공업 수입·수출 부서에서 근무를 시작했습니다. 그곳에서 아름다움과 지성, 따뜻한 성품을 갖춘 동료 변혜욱 씨를 만나 사랑에 빠졌고, 두 사람은 1974년에 결혼했습니다.

1977년, 영수 님은 삼익의 미국 지사 설립을 맡으며 가족과 함께 미국 캘리포니아주 글렌데일로 이민하였습니다. 당시 아들 윤일(현 David)과 함께 이주했고, 1980년에는 딸 Janet이 태어났습니다. 그 무렵 그는 오랫동안 품어온 사업가의 꿈을 실현하기로 결심하여, 가족을 붉은 스테이션 왜건에 태우고 미국 대륙을 가로질러 뉴욕으로 향했습니다. 생후 6개월이던 Janet은 뒷좌석의 빨래통에 누워 그 긴 여정을 함께했습니다.

가족은 뉴욕 퀸즈 플러싱의 작은 원베드룸 아파트에 정착했고, 영수 님은 뉴저지주 저지시티에 남성복 매장을 열었습니다. 그는 끊임없는 노력과 기업가 정신으로 이 사업을 전국 100여 개 매장에 제품을 공급하는 성공적인 도매업체 Supreme Casualwear Inc.로 성장시켰습니다. 그가 디자인한 드레스셔츠, 정장, 캐주얼 의류는 전국 곳곳에서 판매되었으며, 그의 업무는 한국, 중국, 싱가포르, 홍콩, 인도, 인도네시아, 태국 등 세계 각지의 공장과 협업하는 글로벌한 활동으로 이어졌습니다. 1987년에는 사업의 성공으로 가족은 뉴저지주 리지필드파크로 이주하였고, 두 자녀는 그곳에서 성장했습니다. 영수 님은 대학 교육을 직접 받지는 못했지만, 두 자녀가 대학을 졸업할 수 있도록 누구보다 자랑스럽게 지원했습니다.

영수 님은 2006년에 은퇴하였고, 아내 혜욱 님과 함께 노스캐롤라이나주 포트 브래그 인근의 호프 밀스로 이주했습니다. (이 선택은 로스쿨 졸업 후 노스캐롤라이나로 이주하겠다는 26세 딸 Janet의 조언 때문이었으나, Janet은 끝내 이주하지 않았습니다. 인생의 큰 결정을 내릴 때 20대 중반의 조언에는 주의가 필요하다는 작은 교훈이기도 했습니다.) 호프 밀스에서 영수 님은 지역 사회에 빨리 적응했고, 한국전쟁에 참전한 미군 참전용사들과 깊은 우정을 쌓았습니다. 또한 낚시와 보트를 즐기며 노스캐롤라이나 해안에서 보내는 시간을 매우 사랑했습니다.

2022년, 영수 님과 혜욱 님은 딸 Janet의 가족과 더 가까이 지내기 위해 펜실베이니아주 길버츠빌로 이주했습니다.

영수 님은 낚시, 보트 타기, 한국 정치에 대한 관심 등 다양한 취미를 즐기셨습니다. 특히 좋은 음식과 술—스카치위스키와 보드카 마티니—을 좋아하셨고, 스시를 무척 아끼셨습니다. 무엇보다 가족과 함께 식사를 나누고 시간을 보내는 것이 그의 가장 큰 기쁨이었습니다.

고인은 사랑하는 아내 이혜욱 여사, 아들 David Lee(배우자 Julie), 딸 Janet Lee(배우자 Andrew), 그리고 소중한 손주 Robin과 Zoe, 형제·자매인 이길수, 이금숙, 이진수를 남기셨습니다.

장례예배는 11월 21일 금요일 정오 12시에 Phoenixville 소재 R. Strunk Funeral Home(400 Main Street)에서 거행됩니다. 예배에 앞서 오전 11시부터 12시까지 조문을 받습니다.
