

Obituary of Genevieve W. Hughes
Genevieve W. Hughes, 94, Phoenixville
Genevieve Walters Hughes, 94, widow of the late Joseph R. Hughes, Sr., passed away Thursday March 12, 2026 in the Phoenixville Hospital.
Genevieve, known to many as Jenny, was born January 4, 1932 in Wilmer, PA to the late George W. Walters and the late Mabel (Harris) Walters and lived in Schuylkill Township her whole life and attended Phoenixville High School. She married Joe in 1951. Jenny was a stay-at-home mother but would help out at Walters Bar making lunches and waitressing part- time. She had many hobbies that included gardening in her large vegetable garden and growing beautiful flowers for everyone to enjoy. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, crosswords and word scrambles. Jenny loved her many cats over the years and will be missed by her current cat Trixie. Jenny enjoyed playing cards (Hasenpfeffer) with family and friends and attending family picnics where she loved throwing Quiots and horseshoes and was very competitive. She also enjoyed playing PoKeNo and bingo. Jenny also enjoyed watching the Phillies. She was loved for her quick wit and off the cuff comebacks. Everyone knew when Jenny arrived at a function. Her favorite vacations were on LBI (Beach Haven) where she loved going to her favorite seafood restaurant Howards and Lake Wallenpaupack where she used to drive a peddle boat around the cove hoping to see a bear or an eagle or one of the many wildlife animals passing along the shore. She also loved sitting by the fire pit and making s’mores. Jenny attended St. Basil the Great Catholic Church in Kimberton.
Genevieve is survived by her four children: Joanne Hughes Moore (Gary Sr.), Barbara Hughes Nelson (David), Laura Hughes and Joseph Hughes, Jr.
Nine Grandchildren: Gary Moore Jr. (Christine), Amy Moore Segura (Jeffery), Kimberly Moore McNulty (Daniel), Thomas Moore (Jennifer), Carolyn Moore Johnson, Gary Stec Jr. Brigitte Stec Young (Michael), Daniel Nelson (Sara), and Patrick Nelson.
Twenty Great Grandchildren and Five Great-Great Grandchildren, Many Nieces and Nephews on the Walters and Hughes families.
Preceded in death are her siblings: Marie Walters McCann, Barbara Walters LeMay, Samuel Walters, Stanley Walters, Richard Walters, Frederick Walters and George and Edward who were just toddlers at their time of death.
A Memorial Service will be held at the R. Strunk Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460 on April 6. 11:00 AM with Father Bill Kelly presiding. Visitation will be held at 9:30 AM. In honor of Jenny and her love for spring flowers those attending her service are welcome to wear spring colors instead of the traditional black if you so desire.
