Janet was our sweet neighbor for the last four years. Shortly after she moved in, I spotted her in the yard and was excited to meet her. We chatted for a bit, she asked me about my three kids and shared that she was a former principal. She told me how much she loved kids and I could tell right away from her warm interactions with mine, what a special neighbor she would grow to be. Janet and I would chat from our backyards often, sometimes yelling back and forth from our decks. As a stay at home mom who didn’t get out much, I was always happy to see her smile and get a chance to talk. During Covid and quarantine, we would visit on our front porches here and there, masked up and social distanced. When my daughter Evelyn turned five, Janet surprised her with a bouquet of flowers and a big stuffed bear that was delivered from the local flower shop, and it made Evie’s whole day! Every birthday the kids looked forward to her gifts and cards, and at Christmas we enjoyed her delicious baked goods. Once Janet brought the kids gifts from a trip she had been on, and another time she dropped off the children’s sections of newspapers she had collected. Throughout the years, there were many times when Janet would comment about what delight it brought her to see the kids running around outside during a rain shower, sledding down the driveway in a snowstorm, or giggling while running through the sprinkler. In the thick of mothering three young children, she always reminded me to pause and witness the joy of little moments, and savor them. The kids did grow to adore her, and had the privilege of witnessing her kind heart along the way. That’s how our family will remember Janet, as a bright light who lead with love and kindness. I will miss our backyard and front porch chats, and my kids will miss the extra special attention she so effortlessly gave to them. What an honor it was to have been her neighbor and friend, and may we all remember to live the way she did.
