I knew Evelyn as Mrs. O'Connor or simply Linda's mom, since I was a classmate of Linda's all through our school years. In fact, I just saw Linda and her husband at our 40th high school class reunion. What I remember most about Mrs. O'Connor was her generosity toward me. I was invited to go to Chesmont with the family on more than one occasion, and to at least one of Linda's birthday parties. But it was the rides to New Street school on cold mornings that really stand out. That was our Junior and Senior High bus pickup point for most of our secondary school years, and the New Street school was at least a mile away from the end of town where we lived, maybe more. Anyway, it seemed a long walk to a 7th grader, especially when it was cold, and especially on days when I had to carry a bookbag, a gym bag and my musical instrument. I would be trudging across Wall Street bearing these burdens and Mrs. O'Connor would stop, so that I could pile all this gear into the back of their light blue Chevy station wagon and let me get warm in the back seat during the trip to school. I was always glad to see her coming.
