The Syms family lived next door to us in Ridley for most of my growing up. They were good friends to us. In today’s terms, Mrs. Syms was “a cool aunt” to me. She sat at our kitchen table and showed my sister and me how to wear make-up. A number of her dresses came my way, serving as confidence-builders through those fraught high school and college years. One even secured me a date for the senior prom. My sister wore one to an interview and got the job. When I came home on leave from the army sporting my scraggly attempt at a French twist, she said, “Let me show you how to do that right.” She did and I wore it that way for the next twenty years. My parents, peace be upon them, were our link. I deeply appreciate being able to look through the photo display here and see the happiness of her most recent years. Thank you for everything, Mrs. Syms. I owe you a lot.
