Obituary of Cheryl A. Burinsky

Please share a memory of Cheryl to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Cheryl A. Burinsky, 67, of Elverson, PA, passed away on November 16, 2024, at Paoli Hospital after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 16, 1957 in Phoenixville, PA, Cheryl was the beloved daughter of Charles and Margaret “Peggy” (Gracey) Smith.

A 1975 graduate of Spring-Ford High School, Cheryl was an active participant in student government and athletics, playing field hockey, lacrosse, and basketball. She later pursued her passion for teaching, earning an undergraduate degree at East Stroudsburg University and then a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Kutztown University. Cheryl dedicated 36 years of her life to educating young minds as an elementary teacher at several Owen J. Roberts schools.  She spent the majority of her career at French Creek Elementary, from which she recently retired.

Cheryl was raised in Spring City before moving to Pottstown after marrying David Rhen and starting their family.   Her most recent residence was Elverson. She was a cherished member of Hopewell Community Church, where she found joy in attending services and being part of the community. Previously, she was a member of Spring City United Methodist Church.
An avid cook and baker, Cheryl loved sharing her creations with family and friends, especially during holiday parties and family gatherings. She was known for her love of reading, travel, and her dedication to family, always creating warm and welcoming spaces for loved ones.

Cheryl leaves behind her sons, Jeremy Rhen (Meghan) and Nathan Rhen (Jenny); beloved mother, Margaret "Peggy" Buckwalter; her siblings, Sandy Connors (Mike) and Chuck Smith (Angel); her adored grandson, Hunter David Rhen; first-husband David Rhen; and several nieces and nephews.  She is also survived by her cherished boyfriend John Smith of Fleetwood, whom has been her closest companion over the last eleven and a half years. She is predeceased by her late father Charles Smith.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on November 25, 2024, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at R. Strunk Funeral Home, 400 Main Street, Phoenixville, PA 19460. A celebration of Cheryl’s life will be held at a later date in January at Hopewell Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hopewell Church (Hopewell Church)  or the Owen J. Roberts Education Foundation (OJR Education Foundation).
